More details about our specialist areas are listed below.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
The basic theoretical concept guiding cognitive behavioural therapy can be traced back to the stoic philosopher Epictetus of ancient Rome, when he observed that, “People are disturbed not so much by events as by the view which they take of them."

The primary aim of cognitive behavioural therapy is to relieve the emotional distress that you may be experiencing. With the support our service can provide, you can challenge any thoughts or behaviours that are having a negative impact on your daily life.

CBT is recommended as the most appropriate psychological treatment for anxiety and depression by the NICE (National Institute of Clinical Excellence) Guidelines (2004)

CBT is time limited (agreed number of therapy sessions)

CBT involves the client undertaking work on overcoming their problem outside of the therapy session (homework assignment)

CBT involves the client working in a collaborative manner with the therapist

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (E.M.D.R.)
The two primary aims of EMDR are firstly to heal any distressing associations that are linked to past traumatic events, and secondly, to enable you to  respond appropriately in the present.

A significant number of Randomized Controlled Trials (RCT's) have provided evidence of the effectiveness of EMDR in the treatment of trauma related anxiety, i.e. post traumatic stress disorder.

EMDR is recommended as one of the two most appropriate psychological treatments for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) by the NICE (National Institute of Clinical Excellence) Guidelines (March, 2005)

Psychological Effects of Chronic Ill Health
Our service has experience of working with people who experience psychological distress associated with the onset of chronic ill health, such as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME).

Additionally, the therapy provided by START (Ability) Therapy Services, when working with people who have contracted CFS/ME is consistent with the recommendations outlined in the Chief Medical Officers Report (2002), which recommended the following interventions to promote recovery:

Goal/objective setting

Activity/energy management principles

Establishment of a sleep regime

Psychological support
